Come join us for an exploration of primitive cordage and rope making, and learn how our ancestors tied their world together! In this workshop, we’ll learn about plant fiber cordage. We’ll be making two-ply reverse-wrap cordage with Apocynum Cannabinum (Dogbane or Indian hemp).

About the event

Students will leave with a foundational understanding of cordage making, including plant species containing fibers suitable for cordage, processing methods for different materials, hands-on experience, and a length of your own hand-twisted dogbane cord. By the end of our time together, you will be capable of making strong cordage or rope in any environment or situation with nothing but your bare hands! This is one of the foundational teachings of all Ancestral Skills and is an absolute necessity for any survival situation.


This is a beginner’s workshop, so we’ll be working with the simplest technique of cordage manufacture, the finger-twisting method. We’ll also discuss more advanced techniques, such as thigh rolling.


This knowledge was universal among all Indigenous peoples regardless of geographical range or location and is still utilized today by many people. At some point in each of our genealogical histories (no matter where we come from), our ancestors…
